Happy New Year ?

This was a note I copied from a great friend, its pretty deep so read and enjoy and happy new year . . . . . .

On Chinese New Year, it used to be that all unpaid debts were wiped away... that if they had not been paid by the New Year, you basically started over. Of course this was before credit cards...

But in a way, that's how New Year's is viewed, as a starting over point. That's the point of resolutions, isn't it? To convince yourself to make a large change in your life, usually for the better. But what's the point of giving yourself a big goal, when in the back of your mind you are thinking that you probably not going to accomplish it? What is wrong with setting a more attainable goal and then when reaching that, making a bigger one...? Isn't that what we, as people, should be doing? Constantly trying to make ourselves better? A friend of mine told me today, that his "mission is to live a fruitful life, one my kids can be proud of and can look up to".

And while I am hearing a lot of resolutions to make moves career wise, I am not hearing so many in the love/ family realm. I completely understand that careers and security is important (and they do help lead to a happy family life). But sometimes we get so caught up trying to make a future for ourselves we forget the one/ things that make us happy. Focus on the happy, and not the money. No one ever lays on their death bead wishing they had spent more time at the office, but there are plenty who wish they spent more time doing what they loved/ with their loved ones.

Although I personally never make a "resolution" (there's something about that word that screams "break me". I make Goals, missions... and they change constantly. In fact, I usually view Monday as a new starting point. Kinda like, well last week was shit, lets start over. I encourage you all to do the same. In fact, if you are having a shit day, start over the next day. Wipe your slate clean and approach each day like you do a New Year!

Happy New Year to you and yours!

  1. I made a resolution 17 years ago to never make another New Year's Eve resolution. So far I haven't broken it.

The biggest problem I see with setting these really hard to reach goals, is that they are things that most people simply don't want to do. That's why they made the resolution to begin with. "I'm going to start exercising and eating right" The fundamental problem here is that if they had to resolve to do this, they are forcing themselve's to become something they are not. You have to actually want to exercise, and change the way you eat. Not do it because it's the fashionable thing to do.

Why not make a resolution to say hello to a stranger at least once per day, pick up a piece of plastic and make sure it gets into a recycle bin. Donate your old blankets to the Humane Society. Go home and make a one-time donation to to the Susan G Komen Foundation. All of these are selfless resolutions, and will make you feel really good.

Have a really wonderful and safe New Year.

  2. I agree most people make empty resolutions to make themselves feel better and fit in with what everyone else is doing. But to ward it off completely Is not my approach, I made a decision last year after the passing of a friend to live life to its fullest and that goes for all aspects of life, bettering myself, helping others, and neither are huge unattainable goals. I also added to that completing at least 1 significant thing that year. last year it was running a marathon. This is what i believe it is all about reflecting on the year or years past and making improvements so as to live a more productive or fruitful life and many people lose site of that. different people have different goals and different ways of looking at life in my opinion as long as when it all comes full circle it ends in improvement for yourself or those around you thats all that matters.
